Paradise Theatre
The Paradise Theatre was a very interesting project for our Ingenuity team to tackle since the location was a combination of a heritage designated site for commercial use with residential units upstairs. Located at 1006 Bloor Street West in the Bloorcourt Village, the movie theatre first opened in 1937.
Our involvement in the project included the Cafe Paradise, the Blue Door Wine Shop, and the residential units above the wine shop.
For the commercial side, we built the main dining area and the commercial kitchen of Cafe Paradise along with the Blue Door Wine Shop. We also constructed the basement that consisted of a kitchen storage area, fridges and freezers, multi-stalled washrooms, sprinkler room, mechanical room, and electrical room. As for residential, we constructed the 6 upstairs units to completely refresh the space for tenants.
There were a number of challenges that our team overcame, including working on a building that was over 80 years old. We had to be mindful of the restructural and remedial work to ensure there would be no damage to the heritage building. New steel beams were installed for the windows and there was construction of a new roof. Since the majority of the project was under the course of construction during COVID times, we kept safety for all team members and subtrade partners top of mind while navigating delays in lead times, equipment, materials, and more. We also dealt with water issues in the basement.
Overall, the Ingenuity team tackled all the challenges head-on and the end result was a delight for our client, patrons to the cafe and wine shop as well as tenants of the residential units.
